The HCS board had a wealth of resources, including photos, documents and interviews. A core goal for the new design was to make these resources available and engaging to the public.
On the homepage we showcased some short interviews and podcasts with former students.
An illustrated timeline clearly communicates the school’s historical significance in an engaging and easily-digestible way.
The Hockessin Colored School #107 was built in 1920 as part of the segregated public school system in the US. Thanks to the action of a brave mother, Sarah Bulah, the school ended up playing a monumental role in the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, which desegregated schools nationwide.
Today HCS board members are working to restore the school as a historic site and cultural center for the Delaware community. The goal for a more functional and appealing design for their website is to also accompany this effort. The new design showcases the school’s rich history and provides space for them to share news with the community via a blog and calendar of events.
